With more than 60 years experience in the field of international sexual and reproductive health, EngenderHealth currently supports projects in 40 countries through 20 offices worldwide.

Job Summary:
The last five decades have seen a revolution in the availability, use, and funding of family planning worldwide. However, contraceptive use remains low and need for it high in some of the world's poorest and most populous places. The need for family planning (FP) is real, large, growing, and continuous—FP services will have to expand worldwide by more than 40% in the next decade just to maintain current prevalence rates. However, maintaining current prevalence rates will fall far short of protecting everyone who wants to prevent pregnancy. Today, an estimated 350 million couples worldwide have limited or no access to effective and affordable family planning.

Long-acting methods (IUDs and implants) and permanent methods (female sterilization and vasectomy) of FP are effective choices that can enable couples achieve their reproductive intentions. However, in most settings they are underutilized by those wanting to delay, limit or space.

Family planning is at a crossroads. After rising to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s, family planning has yielded the global policy spotlight as well as substantial amounts of funding to issues such as HIV/AIDS and poverty alleviation at a time when the need is greatest and growing. In this setting, EngenderHealth is looking for a Director to revisit its overall corporate strategy, make recommendations for further growth and development, and assist in pursuing strategic funding opportunities for family planning. This position will be housed within a Global and Technical Leadership Department which currently includes Maternal Health, HIV/AIDS, Men as Partners and Gender, and Youth Global Programs

Primary responsibilities include:

  1. Lead and coordinate the development of a corporate strategy and vision for family planning in consultation with the President, Vice President for Programs, Country Directors, Directors of existing projects and other key stakeholders internally;
  2. Assess existing projects and make recommendations for strengthening cohesion and collaboration across projects that address family planning;
  3. Identify opportunities for strategic external partnerships to share EngenderHealth’s clinical and programming competencies and to maintain/strengthen EngenderHealth’s role within the family planning global community
  4. Identify and pursue funding opportunities at both the international and national levels to implement the corporate strategy and vision, in collaboration with the Program Development unit. This will include taking a lead role in the development of family planning technical proposals for submission to donors, based on EngenderHealth’s strategic vision and in response to donor interests, to be carried out either at the country or global level;
  5. Identify, create and respond to opportunities to integrate FP with other critical reproductive health areas
  6. Advocate for more resources for family planning, working in close collaboration with the VPs of Programs and External Relations, the President and partner organizations
  7. Coordinate with Program and Project Directors and EngenderHealth’s Communications and Marketing Unit, in the evaluation, documentation and dissemination of lessons learned and best practices from EngenderHealth’s work in this area;
  8. Provide guidance, support and short-term TA (through staff and/or consultants) to country and global programs for implementation and integration of family planning activities, including information on evidence-based practice, needs assessment, technical assistance, and evaluations;
  9. Represent EngenderHealth to counterparts, donors, and the international community on issues relating to family planning;
  10. Travel up to 30% of the time.

Knowledge, Experience, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Graduate degree in public health, public administration, or related discipline appropriate to position.
  • At least 10 years of experience in family planning services program development and management.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a managerial position with budget and supervisory responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in several of the following areas: family planning, especially clinical/facilities-based methods/service; other reproductive health services; demand creation and community engagement, advocacy, client-provider interaction; gender sensitive approaches; training; Quality improvement; contraceptive security; participatory methodologies; monitoring and evaluation, and research.
  • Demonstrated expertise in program strategy development, strategic planning and implementation experience for country or substantive technical area.
  • Demonstrated experience in forming and managing successful partnerships, including with USAID and other key donors.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability in working with other partners, experts, and host country staff.
  • Proven track record for fund-raising including proposal/RFA development and managing donor relations, particularly from foundations.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and coaching individuals and teams for achieving results.
  • Strategic thinker and visionary.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent multicultural, interpersonal, teamwork partnering and supervisory skills.
  • Overseas residence experience preferred.
  • Competency at the R3/S3 level in Spanish, French, or Arabic is highly desirable

Job Summary:
EngenderHealth has long been involved in activities that relate to maternal health, with particular attention to clinical interventions to reduce and prevent maternal mortality and morbidity, such as emergency obstetric care, post-abortion care, post-partum hemorrhage, fistula repair and prevention, as well as promoting the primary prevention intervention of increasing access to quality family planning services to delay, space and limit births in accordance with individual needs. EngenderHealth has projects to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity in Ghana, to increase access to state of the art interventions in maternal care in West Africa, to address post-partum hemorrhage and AMTSL in Asia, and to advocate for evidence-based management of eclampsia and to prevent and repair fistula globally.

Job Summary:
The Area Director for Africa provides oversight and support for a portfolio of assigned country programs and bilateral projects. The Area Director’s main role is to serve as a facilitative supervisor to EngenderHealth Country Directors and/or Chiefs of Party to enable them to better meet the goals and objectives of their programs. In addition, the Area Director serves as the main locus and advocate for coordinating support from other EngenderHealth divisions and departments on behalf of assigned programs to ensure that support is provided in keeping with a program-centered approach.

The Area Director for Africa has significant corporate responsibility and authority for supporting the country programs and projects to achieve EngenderHealth’s objectives in his/her assigned countries within the region. This includes overseeing and supporting sound strategy development and decision-making related to new business development opportunities, development and implementation of annual workplans and budget, office staffing and structure, and donor relations. The Area Director for Africa will coordinate the performance management process for Country Directors and Chiefs of Party, including serving as a mentor or coach for first-time directors and/or those requiring assistance in specific skill areas. The Area Director plays an important role ensuring that EngenderHealth country programs are managed by individuals that have clear performance expectations and that are provided the organizational support they need to achieve them.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and support assigned Country Program Director/Project Directors in the development of long-term program strategies, annual work-plans and budgets and to assure consistency of workplan, strategy, funds, and activities with EngenderHealth’s mission, objectives, policies and procedures.
  • Mentor and develop the skills of the Country Director or Project Director. Take the lead in coordinating the annual and mid-year performance review of the Country Director or Project Director within his/her prevue, and assist with strategic recruitment and placement of staff for key positions in country offices and projects.
  • Monitor and assess progress of the country programs and projects. This includes meeting regularly with the Country Director or Project Director to monitor actual program activities in comparison with plan; reviewing program budgets and expenses in relation to the program activities, reviewing evaluation plans and results, and reviewing compliance planning and monitoring. Coordinate routine updates (bi-annual portfolio review and monthly check-in meetings) to the Program Management Team, and provide alerts to any interim opportunities or challenges faced in the program.
  • In coordination with and in support of the Country Director or Project Director identify additional technical assistance requirements and potential resources and assist the Country Director or Project Director in resolving any major programmatic, managerial, and staff development and performance issues.
  • Provide strategic support as needed in fundraising for assigned programs, including networking with new and existing donors, assistance with preparing and developing proposals in close coordination with the Country Director and the Program Development Department in the Programs Division.
  • Interpret and communicate organizational policy, and guide implementation of organizational priorities by the Country Director or Project Director.
  • Assist the Country Director to represent EngenderHealth on matters related to the country program/project.
  • Coordinate with other EngenderHealth global and regional projects, as appropriate, and foster the exchange of lessons, tools, approaches and information across programs and projects.
  • Provide input into organization’s strategic direction and opportunities in program development through the strategic opportunities roundtable and representation of the countries programs they oversee.
  • Handle other tasks as assigned.

Education, Experience, and Certifications:

  • Advanced degree in health population, demography, social sciences or related field.
  • Minimum of ten years experience in management of reproductive health/family planning or development program, preferably including management of a country program or project.
  • Experience in managing reproductive health and other health programs in Africa.
  • Experience and demonstrated success in fundraising and managing donor relations.
  • Experience in developing a vision and strategy for a large national program.
  • Experience in proposal development.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of family planning and reproductive health, HIV, and gender issues in general and particularly in region/countries related to their assignment(s).
  • Ability to develop, manage, monitor and evaluate comprehensive programs.
  • Written and spoken fluency in English and other relevant language(s) related to geographic assignment. French a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Skills and experience in managing and mentoring staff.
  • Demonstrated experience working with teams.
  • Experience in fundraising, long term planning, and developing programs.
  • Strategic and creative thinking.
